The Marine Biological Laboratory is announcing the retirement of Paul Speer, Chief Operating Officer, effective September 30, 2024. Paul will continue working with the MBL’s leadership and the Board in an official advisory capacity until June 30, 2025.

Paul has been an integral part of the MBL for nearly 10 years, significantly contributing to our success. Paul first joined the MBL to modernize and tighten our administrative processes and address areas where we were at risk. His efforts have led to significant structural changes that have improved the operation of many parts of the organization, and also allowed us to add new programs, particularly in the non-summer months. He has also helped build a strong working relationship between the MBL and several administrative resources at the University of Chicago. He is confident that our dedicated and highly competent staff will continue to build on the positive changes and progress he instituted over his tenure.

“It has been a great honor and pleasure to have been able to work with such talented colleagues here at the MBL and at the University of Chicago,” said Speer. “I am confident that the MBL is in very good hands as we move forward in exciting new directions.”
