Watch this colorblind cuttlefish change color in under 200 milliseconds | MSN Real Science
Editor’s note: This video mentions research done at the Marine Biological Laboratory where scientists verified that cuttlefish were able to instantly camouflage on different backgrounds, even when light was at its dimmest.
Cuttlefish can transform their appearance in less than 200 milliseconds, using millions of pigment-containing structures controlled by their nervous system. The bizarre part is that they are thought to be colorblind, yet they can dynamically match different backgrounds even under extremely faint starlight. Some species take the display even further while hunting, sending a rippling, strobe-like pattern across their skin that appears to mesmerize prey. Once close enough, two specialized tentacles shoot forward at extreme speed to seize the victim.
