Institutional Statement

The Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole has a long and distinctive history of convening the world’s most accomplished scientists for discovery and innovation. Since 1888, the MBL has hosted thousands of researchers, students, and faculty from all over the world. It is precisely this wealth of perspectives and experiences that makes our community unique. For this reason, the lab strives to maintain a welcoming environment where different perspectives and experiences are combined with an atmosphere of collaboration and training in efforts to advance scientific inquiry and discovery.

This commitment to the MBL Community demands that the MBL create a climate representing the organization’s values of impartiality, respect, and safety. The renowned world research and education conducted at the MBL can only thrive when everyone feels welcome and respected. An atmosphere of collaboration and belonging lays the foundation for empowering students, faculty, and staff to work hard and work together to achieve shared goals.

The MBL’s unique history of convening inter-organizational researchers, faculty, and students from hundreds of institutions worldwide provides a unique challenge to ensuring policies are developed and enforced to address issues fairly and openly. As an institution, we are proud of the efforts that the MBL continues to undertake in its long-standing commitment to advocating and cultivating community, and we are confident that these efforts will have an impact on future generations over the next century.
