The University of Chicago's annual E.E. Just Lecture will be presented on Nov. 17 by Professor Malcolm Byrnes of Howard University, a scholar of Just's life and work.

E.E. Just

Just was an influential American biologist who received his Ph.D. from UChicago in 1916. He first came to the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in 1909 with his scientific mentor, UChicago Professor Frank R. Lillie, who was MBL Director from 1908-1925. Over the course of 20 years of summer research at MBL, Just published more than 50 papers on fertilization, the biology of the cell surface, and early development in marine invertebrates. His book The Biology of the Cell Surface was published in 1939. Just served on the biology faculty at Howard University throughout most of his career.
