Renowned Climate Communications Expert Susan Joy Hassol to Present “Telling the Climate Change Story” May 21 at the MBL

Woods Hole, MA – Susan Joy Hassol, a climate change communicator, analyst, and author well-known for her ability to translate science into English, will present a special lecture on Monday, May 21 at noon in the MBL’s (Marine Biological Laboratory’s) Speck Auditorium, 10 MBL Street, Woods Hole.  The lecture, co-sponsored by the MBL and the Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC), is free and open to the public.

Hassol has worked for more than 20 years to help communicate the science of climate change to a wide variety of audiences, making complex issues accessible to policymakers and the public.  She has written and edited numerous high-level reports, testified before Congress, written an HBO documentary, and appeared on national radio and television shows. She is currently Director of the Boulder, Colorado-based Climate Communication where she works to help climate scientists improve their communication and improve media coverage of climate change.Even as the science of climate change has grown stronger and more compelling, public acceptance has grown weaker and more partisan. In this presentation, Hassol will discuss the range of causes for this dilemma. She will also address how we can improve communication of climate change by what we say and how we say it, dealing with framing, psychological and cultural issues, and questions involving language.
