The Marine Biological Laboratory is saddened to share the passing of John “Jack” E. Edwards, Jr., MD, a longtime member of the MBL community, who died on May 19, 2026. The MBL flag will be lowered in his memory.

Dr. Edwards was an Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and the Emeritus Chief, Division of Infectious Disease at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Dr. Edwards contributed to the MBL’s legacy of educational excellence by co-founding the MBL’s Molecular Mycology course in 1997 with Aaron Mitchell. Under his leadership as director from 1997-2011, Molecular Mycology grew into a world class training program for generations of medical mycologists. In 2021, Dr. Edwards established an endowed lecture series, The Jack Edwards and Aaron Mitchell Endowed Lecture, an annual component of the Molecular Mycology course at the MBL.

We extend our condolences to Dr. Edwards’ family, friends, colleagues, and the many students and researchers whose lives he touched throughout his distinguished career.
